Alfred University MFA student Kameo Chambers showcases "Crown of Thorns" in NYC surrealist exhibition

Kameo Chambers, a second-year Alfred University Electronic Integrated Arts MFA student, School of Art & Design, recently exhibited her work in the Real World surrealist group show at Grace Exhibition Space in New York City.

Chambers exhibited her thought-provoking comb sculpture “Crown of Thorns” at Grace Exhibition Space, located downtown at 182 Avenue C. The exhibition was held from Jan. 3 to 5 and featured a diverse range of works exploring intersections between surrealism and contemporary themes. Chambers’ piece captivated audiences with its intricate design and symbolic commentary on identity and culture.

Chambers is a Jamaican American conceptual artist, designer, and curator who reimagines cultural memory and perception through digital and physical assemblages. Working with mediums such as video, photogrammetry, glass, sugar, plastic combs and hair clips, her research-based practice creates surreal, hyperrealized landscapes that interrogate autonomy, material culture, and the aesthetics of Black femme embodiment.

Her work has been exhibited at numerous venues including Kungliga Musikhögskolan (Sweden), Cultural DC, BRIC TV, Vox Populi, and the University of Pittsburgh.

In recognition of her academic and artistic accomplishments, Chambers is a Vira I. Heinz Scholar and won First Place with Special Merit from the American Scholastic Press Association (2021–22).
